Before the supernatural events of Shepherd's Glen, Dr. Martin Fitch was a man of science and standing in his community. However, the death of his wife and the subsequent decline of his daughter, Nora, into a comatose state caused by a severe illness (a brain tumor) shattered his sanity. Consumed by grief and a refusal to accept natural laws, he turned to forbidden occult knowledge independently, not as a member of The Order.

Fitch believed that by harvesting the life force of specific individuals—selected through the ancient lineages of the Bartlett, Holloway, Fitch, and Shepherd families—he could channel their vitality into Nora to restore her as the intended vessel for the ritual. However, he only successfully killed one victim (Joey Bartlett) before being stopped; the other deaths in the town are not directly attributed to his actions. His medical facility became a front for these abominable experiments, transforming from a place of healing into a slaughterhouse where science was perverted by desperate obsession.

Douglas Cartland stood over the gurney, his hands trembling not from fear, but from a feverish anticipation. The air smelled of antiseptic and copper, a familiar scent to him now. He adjusted his glasses, looking down at the young patient whose heart monitor beeped a slow, dying rhythm.

"It is for her," he whispered to the empty room, his voice cracking under the weight of years of denial. "Jessica will wake up because I say so." The fog outside the window seemed to press against the glass, as if the town itself was watching him commit this final sin.
